The United Nations is called upon to help ensure the safe transport of humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine
Lithuania's call to take coordinated action to facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian people was supported by the Ministers of Social Security of Latvia, Estonia and Poland. To this end, ministers signed a joint call for action, which will be delivered to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva, Switzerland.
“By signing the joint document, the Baltic States and Poland reaffirmed their support to Ukraine in the field of social and humanitarian aid,” said Monika Navickienė, Minister of Social Security and Labour.
The joint statement underlines that the unprovoked massive Russian invasion of democratic Ukraine necessitated urgent humanitarian assistance and protection for its population. The Baltic States and Poland, together with international non-governmental organisations, have already mobilised the necessary human and financial resources to provide the Ukrainians with the necessary assistance.
The partners in the initiative agreed to cooperate in providing assistance to all people fleeing war, especially the most disadvantaged ones.
Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian social security ministers also prepared a joint appeal to the United Nations and Red Cross organisations for a safe humanitarian corridor for civilians in Ukraine and war refugees. Humanitarian corridors are urgently needed to provide humanitarian aid and essential goods as well as medical supplies.
