Social insurance pensions for widows, widowers and orphans

Widows/widowers and orphans pensions are granted to spouses and children (or adopted children) of a deceased person (or person who has been declared diseased or recognised as a person whose whereabouts are unknown) if the deceased person had the required minimal pension social insurance record for the award of the social insurance disability pension(’social insurance pension for work incapacity’ before 31 December 2023; ‘invalidity pension’ before 1 July 2005) or for the old-age pension.

Widows/widowers pensions are granted to a person who has reached pension age (irrespective of the widow’s/widower’s age at the moment of the spouse‘s death) provided that the diseased person had acquired the minimum pension social insurance record required for the granting of the relevant pension while working at Lithuanian enterprises, institutions or other organisations except for persons who were receiving the disabilty pension (work incapacity) or the old-age pension as of the date of death. No documents on the deceased person‘s insurance record are required when widows/widowers pensions are granted for persons deceased before 1 June 1991. Widows/widowers pensions are also granted to persons who, as of the date of the spouse‘s death (or during 5 years thereafter) were assessed and recognised as person with disabilty (incapable for work or partially capable for work before 31 December 2023;as ‘invalids’ before 1 July 2005) or were assessed and recognised as such at the time of nursing the diseased person’s children (or adopted children).

A widow/widower who had no children with the deceased person is entitled to the widow’s/widower’s pension provided that at least one year has elapsed from the marriage registration according to the established procedure until the spouse‘s death. The pension is awarded at the basic amount of widows/widowers pensions (EUR 21 as of 1 January 2015). Should the widow/widower remarry, payment of the pension will be stopped.

Starting from 1 January 2018 the basic pension amount of the widows/widowers pension indexed on the basis of the 7-year average rate of growth of the wage fund. In 2024 the widows/widowers pension is 38,23 EUR.

Orphans pensions are granted to children (or adopted children) of the deceased person who are under 18 years of age, or older if they were assessed and recognised as disabled persons (as ‘invalids’ before 1 July 2005), but only up to 24 years of age, as well as children who were recognised as disabled persons (as ‘invalids’ before 1 July 2005) after the 24th birthday (but only by the 26th birthday) due to consequences of an illness or trauma suffered before the person became 24 years of age, provided that they remained person with disabilty all the time since they were recognised as disabled. In addition, pupils studying under general education programmes or formal vocational education programmes at educational establishments and students enrolled in full-time studies who are over 18 are entitled to the orphan’s pension until completion of the said programmes/studies (except for pupils studying under general education programmes  who are entitled to receive the orphan’s pension until 31 August of the year of completion of the programme), however, only until they reach 24 years of age.

The amount of the orphan‘s pension is 50% of the sum of the general and individual parts of the pension that was due or could have been due to the deceased person Where there are more children entitled to the orphan’s pension, all of them receive equal parts but not more than 100% of the total amount of the determined disabilty pension or the old-age pension.

Orphans who have lost both parents (and adopted parents) are awarded orphans pensions for both parents/adopted parents.

Upon indexation of the basic pension amount and the pension point value, orphans’ pensions are calculated on the basis of the new values.
